Halls of Justice in Downtown Santa Ana

Santa Ana is the county seat and the second most populous city in Orange County. The most important criminal justice facilities are located in downtown. Pictured below is the Orange County Central Courthouse.
Orange County Central Courthouse -- 700 West Civic Center

This courthouse was designed by renowned architect Richard Neutra and constructed in 1968. Some of the most high-profile criminal trials have been held here. Sadly, this building is showing its age and there are no plans for a large scale renovation.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department headquarters and central jails are located a stone's throw down Flower Street. For those who might not know, the Orange County Sheriff is an elected official that manages the county jail system and provides an assortment of county wide law enforcement services.

As you can imagine, when massive courthouses and jails were built in the 1960s, legal offices and bail bond businesses were sure to follow. The 1970s building pictured below is right across the street from the Central Courthouse.

There sheriff's department outgrew its headquarters several years ago and needed overflow offices. The tower on the right belongs to the sheriff, while the one on the left provides offices for other county departments.

Pictured below is the Orange County Coroner's Office, which is a division of the sheriff's department. Autopsies are conducted in this building and the cadavers are stored here as well.

The Old Orange County Courthouse was built in 1900. This building now serves as a museum and administers marriage certificates.

This beautiful A-4 Skyhawk is in eyeshot right across the street from the old courthouse, so I could not help but include it in this post. It is a memorial dedicated to Marine and Naval personnel who served at the now closed El Toro and Tustin Marine Corps bases, which were located in Orange County.

  1. Great photos, David. It'd be a shame if the Neutra courthouse building was torn down! Would you know the history of the Hall of Records building next to the Old OC Courthouse? I wish Orange County had a building permit database accessible online.

  3. Amazing located places! Not able to find one of the cheap convention center for my son's first birthday party. All our dear ones ar looking for a huge celebration. I think dinner and desserts with gifts will be enough. Cake designs are still a mystery for me as already thought by my husband. Hoping for a superb day.
